The music cut out and over the speakers her voice crackles in “I’m a bit hesitant to hit the usual spot, don’t want to send ya’ll out in 18-24 foot waves”…. As we begin listing to the left, turning back the direction just had come. “The sister boat has hit massive hurricane swell up ahead, and sorry ladies and gents but we’ll be staying costal today”..
It’s our last sunny day before hurricane Lane would cause flooding and fires on Maui, we’re heading on the boat to a stellar snorkel spot. The capt has made the call, and is confident we’ll find a concealed spot closer to shore; until we get there try to take in the view of clouds clipping the huge volcanic surroundings.
We’ll be dropped anchor at an artificial reef, a long wharf that was destroyed by the last hurricane to hit Hawaii, that will offer an entirely different world view. With turtles, baby sharks and massive schools of fish at good 15-20ft depth.
